West Hawaii’s 2020 Teacher of the Year Resigns!

Story_Image_8.jpg

Yes, you read that right. I officially resigned as a public school teacher on August 24, 2021, effective immediately. Hawaii school systems are requiring teachers and staff to be tested for covid weekly or provide proof of vaccination. I know what I stand for, and I know what is right.

THIS IS NOT RIGHT.

Segregation and discrimination against groups of people used to be ILLEGAL! My mind is blown that discrimination is being accepted right before my own eyes, our children's eyes, and in our communities. Our Liberties are being ripped out from under our feet. I will not allow this, not for myself, my children, and my family. When the system creates more harm than good for our children, I can no longer be a part of this problem and the divide it is causing.

If you know me, you know that teaching is my life. I eat, sleep, and breathe teaching. Everything I do has always been for my students. I know how much I am needed this year. But what my students need the most is someone standing up to these mandates and fighting for their future. I will never comply with these illegal mandates that violate my constitutional rights.

I have a right to choose what is best for me. You also have a right to decide what is best for you. It is never too late to make the right choice. Silence is an answer. Ignoring this is an answer. Sweeping this under the rug and following "marching orders" is NOT the right thing to do.

I am scared, nervous, sad, angry, frustrated, relieved, and happy all at once. I don't need a classroom to teach, and I won't stop teaching. I am so excited about the journey ahead and teaching without restrictions or modern-day classroom bullying of being told what to do and how to serve my students. Konawaen Elementary, you lost a damn good thing when this teacher handed in her keys today.✌🏽

"As a teacher, this is what I do; this is what I teach my students, use your voice in the school, in the community...make a difference not just with your words, but with actions... I'm living what I teach." Watch the full interview HERE
